On Monday, January 16th, we lost our founder, Paul Barrentine. He passed away suddenly, surrounded by his family and friends. He worked in this industry since 1983, founded Memphis Performance, and co-founded BTE.

Memorial services for Paul Barrentine will be held 2 PM Tuesday, January 24th, at the Collierville Funeral Home, 534 West Poplar Avenue , Collierville, Tennessee. Everyone is welcome. We all really appreciate your phone calls, messages, and emails

We will end our business day early on the 24th, at noon, to honor his memory.

Bogacki Continues Beech Bend Mastery with Strong Tenn-Tuck Performance

Luke Bogacki drove his ThisIsBracketRacing.com backed American Race Cars dragster to a pair of final round finishes in last weekend’s Tenn Tuck Triple Crown bracket series event at Beech Bend Raceway inBowling Green, KY. The Tenn Tuck Triple Crown is recognized as one of the most competitive big dollar bracket racing series’ in North America, routinely hosting several of the best sportsman racers in the nation. In Friday night’s $5,000-to-win event, Bogacki took runner-up honors after falling to 5-time NHRA champion Jeg Coughlin, Jr. in the final round. A day later, he scored a $5,000 victory when he bested Buddy Ferrell in the final stanza.

“My car was really good all weekend,” said Bogacki. “We just got this motor back from Huntsville Engine and it was a thrash to get everything together in time for the race, but it all paid off. The car was flawless. I didn’t do anything special behind the wheel, I just had good timing. I made a handful of real nice runs, and they just happened to come when I needed them. When I made mistakes, my opponents made bigger ones. I was just in the right place at the right time. I haven’t had a great season, but hopefully this will be a nice shot in the arm as we move forward with the season ending swing of big bracket events.”

A less than stellar season by Bogacki’s lofty expectations would be considered solid by most: Saturday’s victory marked his 15^th final round appearance of the season and his 7^th victory. Of his 15 final round appearances, 5 have come at Beech Bend Raceway as Bogacki continues a history of incredible results at the western Kentucky facility. He won the Tenn-Tuck Triple Crown points championship in 2004 on the strength of a March weekend sweep of the $10,000 main events (a feat that has yet to be duplicated in the history of the series). He has appeared in a whopping 12 Tenn-Tuck final rounds in the past seven years, winning 8 of those matchups. In addition, he earned top honors at the Beech Bend NHRA Lucas Oil Divisional event, taking the Super Comp crown in each of the last two seasons. Bogacki, now a resident of southern Illinois, has claimed at least one victory at Beech Bend Raceway each season since moving from Texasto Alabama in 2004.

“I don’t know why I’ve had so much success at Bowling Green,” said Bogacki. “Honestly, it probably has a lot to do with my attitude. Beech Bend is my favorite race track. I love the facility, and the Jones family really takes care of their customers. So I’m usually having a good time when I’m there, and I always feel like I race better when I’m having fun.”

A broken output shaft or drive shaft can be devastating for the entire
driveline. Often the transmission housing or case will be damaged
severely. This is especially costly if you are using an aftermarket
case. ($800+!) But fear no longer, as BTE now has the ability to
repair most cases that have experienced this type of failure. Send us
your housing for inspection, and if it is salvageable, we can install
an insert into the rear of the case that will replace the damaged

If you've improved your transmissions fluid capacity with one of our
deep pans, another easy to install upgrade is our Super Filter kit for
the powerglide transmission. In a racing transmission, we want to
feed the transmission all of the fluid it needs; if it ever starves
for fluid, then the transmission will not perform at its peak level or
even fail in an epic fashion. This kit is an easy way to open up even
more fluid flow potential. The kit, available in two versions, uses
a Torqueflite style filter that has a much larger surface area than
the standard powerglide fluid filter. This kit installs in just a few
minutes and requires no special transmission knowledge. The standard
kit includes a paper style filter, but we also have a screen style
filter for even higher flow. Like our deep pan kit, pair this with a
fresh filling of our BTE transmission fluid for best results.

Having information real time information about engine RPM, oil
pressure, or fuel pressure are very important. Equally important, but
often overlooked, is information on the pressure level of your
automatic transmission fluid. Each transmission has an optimal
pressure range for each gear, and BTE's Transmission Pressure Gauge is
a great way to have this information available at all times when in
the driver's seat. Low or dropping fluid pressure can indicate a
number problems within the transmission, so having this information
can prevent costly transmission failure. With a maximum pressure
rating of 300 PSI, it will work for most applications. We also have 2
line kits available with lengths of 6 and 12 feet in length. The
gauge is manufactured by the leading USA performance instrument
company, and is available in attractive silver. We will also have

A key safety improvement in a racing powerglide is the addition of a
locking dipstick. A locking dipstick prevents fluid from venting or
blowing out of the filler tube and keeps it off the the track. These
rigid tubes mount closely to the transmission case to clear any
shields or tight transmission tunnels. The base of the filler tube
also includes a rubber boot for a snug and secure fit with the
transmission case. A locking dipstick is required at most racing
tracks. We have dipsticks available for standard setups or for
dragsters and altereds, and for stock and aftermarket transmission
cases. Pair this with our overflow tank kit for a very safe and race
ready transmission.

BTE 258210 Powerglide Deep Aluminum Pan with black coating

One of the most cost effective ways to improve your powerglide
transmission in several different areas is with the addition of a deep
pan. Our deep aluminum pan for the powerglide does several important
things to improve the transmission:

1. The added depth increases the fluid capacity. More fluid provides
more stable temperatures. The increased surface area also allows for
more effective cooling, as well as do the fins that run the length of
the pan, adding more area for heat to dissipate.

2. A cast aluminum pan is much more rigid than a fabricated aluminum
pan or stamped steel pan. This rigidity will decrease flex in the
transmission case in many areas, increasing the overall strength of
the transmission greatly.

3. The black coating dissipates heat more effectively, and keeps the
pan much cleaner as it resists staining and grime from penetrating the
cast aluminum.

This kit includes everything you need to make the very easy conversion
to our deep pan setup: all new pan bolts, a new gasket, and a filter
extension.

Even if you don't build your own transmissions, this is something that
any racer can easily install within a few minutes. Refill the
transmission with BTE's transmission fluid for an even better
performing transmission after the install.

20th Anniversary Open House

We recently celebrated our 20th Anniversary by hosting our first ever Open House. When the idea first came about, we weren't sure how many of our customers would like to spend a Saturday with us and peek inside our “Big Blue Building”. However, we were thrilled with the amount of participants that we had register. Our final registration number was over 250 and we had people come from all over the Mid-South, as well as Louisiana, Kentucky, and New York.

During the Open House, guests were able for the first time to tour our facilities and watch two seminars hosted by Brandon Barrentine. He gave presentations on our Transmission and Torque Converter Departments.

Guests who visited were also able to speak directly with representatives from some of our most popular brands: John Larkin from Red Horse Plumbing and Hedman Hedders. Chuck Schwam from Joe Gibbs, Autometer, Ram Clutches, and Moroso. Larry Dalgo from Mr. Gasket and PRW. T.J. Tracy from Motorvation.

In the last hour of the Open House, we gave away t-shirts, hats, diecast cars, a MSD Ignition system, Joe Gibbs Racing Oil, an Automoter Tachometer, a flat screen television, travel luggage, a BTE Torque Converter, and a BTE Transmission. Also, we were able to give away gift certificates from Holly Springs Motor Sports, Eagle Racing Engines, Digital Delay, Huntsville Engines, and Coalberg Production's World Footbrake Challenge.

Hosting our first Open House was a great way to give back to the customers that have been supporting us over the last 20 years and a hands-on introduction to those who are just getting to know us. Thank you to everyone who attended and who participated!

Woodville, AL: ThisIsBracketRacing.com, an online bracket racing driving school, has launched on the world wide web as of February 3, 2009. ThisIsBracketRacing.com, the first site of it's kind, has been developed and presented by sportsman racing standout Luke Bogacki.

While various features of the website are available to visitors and guests, the main attraction of ThisIsBracketRacing.com is a subscription-only online driving school. In addition to a monthly tutorial column penned by Bogacki, the site will also feature guest editorial columns from some of the most successful competitors in sportsman racing (early guest editorials will come from Jared Pennington, Troy Williams, Jr., and Brian Folk), a weekly Question & Answer session between instructors and subscribers, a comprehensive schedule of sportsman racing events (NHRA, IHRA, and big bracket events), and ThisIsBracketRacing.com's unique sportsman "Power Rankings" which rank sportsman competitors regardless of sanction, class, and event type.

"I'm really excited about ThisIsBracketRacing.com," explained Bogacki. "We've been working on this idea for over a year, so it's very exciting to see it come to fruition. Bill C. Taylor Gets Honored

At this year's annual Memphis Rodders Reunion Bill C. Taylor and Larry Coleman were the honored guests. The Memphis Rodders paid tribute to the years of hard work that both men have put into the racing industry in Memphis and around the world. The nostalgic night included videos about the honorees, pictures from the past, and several cars on display. It was a great night to see old racing buddies and meet some of the legends. Thanks to the Memphis Rodders for a wonderful event!

One important element of drag racing during the last 10 years has been the "big money" bracket racing. Large, high payout events across much of the south and eastern coast have brought racers from across the country to compete for $10k+ purses.

In the last 2 years, this type of racing has declined dramatically. Some may point to rising fuel prices, while others highlight the unsustainable lifestyle of massive, professional level bracket racing operations. For whatever reason, there are simply fewer of these events.

During this decade of high dollar, high profile racing, across the country small tracks continued to operate their usual weekend events. Small, casual, and friendly (on the wallet, for the family, and just in general), these tracks are the true backbone of the drag racing industry.

Danny Waters Jr and crew rolled up to Budds Creek MD with one thing in mind, bringing home their first National Event 'Iron Man' of the 2008 IHRA Knoll Gas Nitro Jam racing series. When the smoke cleared, they had done just that!

'This Moser Engineering, 2008 American Race Cars dragster was on a mission this weekend!. Eventhough the track surface was extremly hot, these Hoosier Racing Tires kept us hooked up with consistant 60 foot times all day long'.

To top it all off, it was Waters' very first Father's Day. 'When I rolled back into the staging lanes after the Final round, I handed my dad the Iron Man and said Happy Father's Day! After a couple of moments and laughter, he handed it back and said 'Happy Father's Day from your son!!!'. What a great feeling, words couldn't describe how proud we both felt.'

This final round win should bost the Moser Engineering Quick Rod entry solidly into the top of the National Points standings with room still left to improve.

Getting to know us: Bryan Robinson

On a regular interval, I will post information about members of our team. I like knowing a bit more about who I interact with in customer/vendor as well as partner/partner relationships. As a business, we feel it is very important that our customers and partners know not just about our prices, products, and services, but also about our credentials and character. - Brandon

Bryan Robinson is a true racing specialist and valued member of the BTE/Memphis Performance team. Bryan's father Johnny Robinson is a 30+ year veteran of bracket racing. Bryan grew up working with his father in their family commercial fishing business on the Tennessee river. Mr. Robinson had been a friend of my family for years, but I didn't meet Bryan until I myself was doing some driving of the first BTE test car at Memphis Motorsports Park.

Bryan, who had likely been driving a race car before he could legally drive a passenger car on the public road system, was a formidable racer on the local tracks and regional bracket races. In 2002 and 2003, Bryan and his father stepped up their racing program and competed nationally for the NHRA Super Gas and Super Comp championships, and in 2003 Bryan was crowned winner of the NHRA Super Gas title. Both Bryan and I had recently completed our undergraduate college degrees, and I felt he would be a tremendous addition to our team at BTE / Memphis Performance when the racing season concluded. I was graciously invited to Pomona, CA that year for the final NHRA event and awards ceremony at the Kodak Theatre in Hollywood. Bryan and I departed from Memphis early in the week to begin race qualifications at Pomona, and his parents and wife Cassie arrived later in the week.

Traveling is a highly effective setting for really getting to know someone: how do they handle stress or fatigue, how to they interact with people from other areas of the country or world, what are their food allergies (don't feed Bryan shrimp), or how do they have fun (that poor rental car...)?

Bryan gave a great winner's speech, and shortly after our return, Bryan joined us here at BTE / Memphis Performance.

Since then, Bryan has continued to race locally, regionally, and nationally in many classes. He has expertise in throttlestop, bracket, and recently, class racing. When not racing his own dragster, Bryan is currently partnered with contemporary and mutual friend Luke Bogacki on a A/SA and B/SA car competing on the NHRA and IHRA circuit. Bryan also leads much of our internal and external testing for new products and new torque converter combinations.

After a long week at the office, Bryan is usually bound for a race on the weekend. He is truly a racing enthusiast.

New High Gear Powerglide Piston (And how it was born)

Unlike some performance industries, the drag racing drive train industry has been supplied for nearly thirty years by junkyards. Using often modified OEM parts from the economy two speed Powerglide transmission of the 1960s and 1970s, drag racers, transmission builders, and parts suppliers championed the simplicity, durability, and for many years, availability of core, junkyard parts.

During the course of the last several decades, these qualities have been affected by consumption of available parts, junkyard scrap recycling, the elements, and the ever increasing demands put on the transmissions by higher quality racing surfaces and increased engine output levels.

Even before the depletion of available OEM core parts, several components of the Powerglide transmission have proven to be clearly unsuitable for racing, such as the OEM iron clutch hub and the input shaft. These were quickly redesigned and manufactured.

As time passes, the two curves of availability and durability change and more parts are fashioned from new material because of these changes, such as the case, gearsets, and pumps. Parts manufacturers like BTE must meet the demand of higher output engines from their customers and also combat the dwindling supply of OEM parts.

Recently, the industry has reached a point of no-return. Core prices for junkyard cores have risen so high in price that it is now more economical to manufacture new parts than buying old oem parts and re-manufacturing. (And a new, designed specifically for racing component is much more desirable than a 40 year old reworked piece from a junkyard, right?)

The pictured high gear piston is one of the last holdouts of the OEM days. This new piston replaces the factory design primarily due to low availability and not performance limitations. We've changed the design to use a spring pocket for spring retention. These billet aluminum pieces are strong and suitable for all applications.
